The Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) Cadet Corps Program is designed for students in years 11 and 12. It assists students to gain practical life skills in a supportive environment.

Students have the opportunity to develop leadership skills and to increase their abilities to work effectively as a member of a team. All students are encouraged to take the initiative and to see the value of self-discipline. In addition, students are encouraged to become positive and productive members of the community.

Loan uniforms are supplied and students have access to a range of top quality equipment, including orienteering compasses, CB radios, dome tents and kayaks. The program emphasis is towards a practical, ‘hands on’ approach. Activities covered in the program include:

  • Parades and some basic drill
  • Map and compass skills
  • Introduction to radio communication
  • Basic rescue knots
  • Natural hazards
  • Introduction to outback survival skills
  • Fire safety / Water safety
  • First aid and emergency care

These skills are further enhanced during day excursions and camps throughout the year.
